NIN FAQs

General

The NIMC is the primary legal institution in Nigeria mandated by law to institutionalise the identity management system and regulate the identity sector. (NIMC Act 2007; Sections 1, 2, 5 and 6).

The National Identification Number (NIN) is a unique set of numbers issued to a successfully enrolled individual. This randomly generated number, is assigned at the completion of enrolment into the National Identity Database (NIDB) and identifies the individual for life.

Simplify International Synergy Limited is an official licensed partner of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) for Diaspora NIN Enrolment. The license permits us to collect your data and transmit same to the NIMC Environment for subsequent processing and generation of your NIN by NIMC.

All citizens of Nigeria (residing in Nigeria and in the diaspora), from age zero (birth) and above are eligible to enrol for their NINs. It is mandatory for every citizen and legal resident to enrol for the National Identification Number (NIN).

The NIN is used to tie all records about an individual in the database as well as to establish or verify the individual’s identity. It is used to match an individual with his/her biometric data and other details in the National Identity Database during verification and authentication. The NIN is the only document permissible by the laws of Nigeria for the identification of a Nigerian. It is the only identity token required before services are provided by Government Agencies abroad, including consular services provided by Nigerian Embassies and Missions abroad. In addition, the NIN is used for the issuance and renewal of the Nigerian International Passport, opening, activation and operation of a Nigerian bank account, obtaining a voter’s card and other transactions as may be prescribed by the NIMC and the Federal Government from time to time.

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) in partnership with licensed and authorized entities as Simplify Synergy Limited, have embarked on the process of NIN Enrolment for Nigerians outside the country. This is in a bid to ensure that Nigerians living abroad are included in the National Identity Database and can be a part of the resultant benefits.

The NIMC is an agency of the Federal Government who has the powers to partner with the private sector to provide services under its mandate, thereby concentrating on its regulatory functions. The Licensed Partners are qualified companies allowed to carry out Front End Services (FES) in countries they are authorised to operate in. They are guided by the laid down rules & regulations set out in their respective licenses and also data protection & privacy rules and regulations of those countries.

Once a NIN is assigned to an individual, it can never be reassigned, given or used by another person – that makes it unique in nature. In the case of the demise of an individual, his/her NIN is retired once a death certificate is presented to the Commission and the individual’s death is established.

No, you cannot enrol more than once.  Immediately your enrolment is successful and your National Identification Number (NIN) is presented to you, the Automated Biometric Information System (ABIS) will store all your information supplied and any attempt to enrol again by the same person will be detected and denied. Note that attempting to enrol more than once is a punishable offence.

NIMC is solely responsible for the processing and generation of NIN. Simplify Synergy has no control over NIN generation nor how long it takes for the process to be completed. We can only issue NINs generated as soon as they are made available by NIMC. Your NIN, once ready, will be issued via your specified email address. Please note that NIN Cards are not issued at this time.

NINs issued may require some time to be synced with the NIMC Verification Service and activated accordingly. Consequently, the successful usage of an issued NIN for documentation purposes such as International Passport applications, Nigerian mobile SIM registration and other related services may happen few days after receiving your NIN. NIMC is solely responsible for the activation of your NIN. Simplify Synergy has no control over NIN activation nor how long it takes for the process to be completed. In addition, further enquiries on NIN activation issues where the NIMC has confirmed a NIN to be active should be directed to the Commission

Our support team can be reached on +234 912 114 5050 Mondays to Fridays (08:00hours to 16:00hours GMT). You may also reach out to NIMC directly as specified on the NIMC website.

Sometime ago, the NIMC embarked on an exercise to automatically generate NINs for people who already have BVNs. (Note that not all BVNs have NINs). As such, for persons in this category, they currently have a NIN by virtue of their BVN record and a new enrolment will never generate another NIN. However, BVN generated NINs are not fully active and applicants are required to undergo a modification to:

  1. Re-validate the personal data tied to the existing NIN
  2. Capture applicant’s biometric details

iii.         Harmonize (i) and (ii) into the National Identity Database

The foregoing will ensure that a valid NIN is generated and issued subsequently.

Applicants are therefore encouraged to submit their BVNs to the enrolment officer for a pre enrolment check to confirm whether or not such applicant has a BVN generated NIN. This is the first step to be taken at the point of enrolment. Note that the enrolment officer may not be able to ascertain whether or not an applicant has a BVN generated NIN in all cases, especially where there is a network related issue at the time of confirmation or if unbeknown to the applicant, he or she has a BVN.

Where it is confirmed that an applicant already has a BVN generated NIN after a fresh enrolment has been done, The fresh enrolment is automatically null and void by NIMC and the applicant will be required to return to the Enrolment Centre for a modification of the existing NIN as earlier specified in i-iii above.

Then we can carry out an enrolment for you

For Enrolment for Adults (Over 16 years)

On The Day of Your Enrolment

At the Enrolment Centre, an Enrolment Officer will work with you to upload your personal details on the NIMC database. Your height measurement will be taken and your supporting documents scanned. Your biometrics (10 finger prints, headshot photograph and signature) will also be taken. The entire process takes an average of 15 to 20minutes.

Your NIN enrolment is deemed finalised only after the biometric capture is done. This involves capturing and processing of your 10 fingerprints, your facial image and your electronic signature by the Enrolment Officer.

If there is no issue with your registration, at the completion of the enrolment process, the Enrolment Officer will issue a transaction slip to you. The Transaction Slip indicates evidence of successful enrollment and the tracking ID for following up with the progress of your enrolment.

Your NIN Slip will be sent to you via email once it is ready.

This is most likely a case of an issue with your enrollment. i.e. your biometrics details resembles another in the NIDB Database or you are attempting a double registration. NIMC will be required to investigate the issue further and revert accordingly. You will be notified when we receive a feedback from NIMC on the subject. You may also track the status of your application online.

Children under 16 years of age must be accompanied to the Enrolment Centre by at least one parent with a valid NIN. On appointment day, please bring your ward(s) to the Enrolment Centre and come along an original hardcopy of your ward(s) birth certificate(s) as well as your NIN for verification. The NIN of the ward(s) will be linked to the parent or legal guardian(s) NIN until the child attains the age of 16 years and can be enrolled for biometrics capture when the biometrics have fully formed. The NIN issued to the ward(s) is the identity for life and cannot be changed.
